Municipal tax assessment

Each year you receive the assessment notice for municipal taxes (aanslagbiljet gemeentelijke belastingen). It shows how much tax you must pay. You will receive the bill by post or in your Berichtenbox on MijnOverheid.

  1. You receive an assessment notice

    Are you the owner or user of a residential or commercial property on 1 January? Then you will receive an assessment notice. This shows how much tax you must pay. You usually receive the bill in February.

  2. Pay the municipal taxes

Which taxes you pay

If you are a property owner, you pay:

Pay in instalments

You can also pay in instalments, either by direct debit or with a payment plan.

You give the municipality permission to automatically withdraw the amount in parts from your bank account. This happens around the 25th of each month. You do not need to make the transfers yourself.

Your request should include:

Has your situation changed after you received the tax bill. For example, because you are moving or because someone has died? These changes only take effect the following year. This also applies if the bill is in the name of someone who has moved away or passed away. You do not need to file an objection.

I am going to move

Are you moving within The Hague? Begin link: Report your move, end link. . You will then receive a waste tax bill for your new address.

Are you moving to a different municipality or moving in with someone else? You can request a refund for the waste tax. You only pay for the months you lived at your previous address.

Do you live or did you live on a houseboat and has your situation changed? Then you can request Begin link: a refund, end link. for the mooring fee (precario tax) and the waste tax. The municipality will adjust the amount on your tax bill.

If you are renting a home, you pay only the waste tax. Are you renting a room in someone else’s house? Then the owner pays the waste tax.

Yes, if you have just purchased or rented the property to live in yourself. This applies even if you are not yet living there or not yet registered at the address. For example, because you are renovating first. In that case, you must pay waste tax for 3 people.

No, if you will not use the property yourself but will rent it out. In that situation, you do not have to pay the waste tax.

The assessment notice is addressed to 1 of the owners or residents. It goes to the person who has been registered at the address the longest. If all residents have been registered for the same amount of time, the assessment notice is sent to the oldest person.

Yes. You can ask the municipality to send all mail from the Tax Department to a different address.
