Apply for a Dutch passport

You do not yet have a Dutch passport or it will soon expire? And you are registered at the Municipality of The Hague? You can make an appointment here to apply for a new passport. You can also do this for your child.

The municipality expects it to get busier as of March 2024 with many more applications for new travel documents.

How does it work?

  1. Make an appointment

    To apply for a new passport, you first need to make an appointment online. You can make an appointment at City Hall Spui of the Leyweg City Office.

  2. Come well prepared to the appointment

    You will need a number of things during the appointment.

    Your passport will be ready after 6 working days and you will be able to collect it.

Expedited procedure

Do you need a new passport quickly? You can use an expedited procedure. You need to indicate this during your appointment. Are you applying before 14.00 hrs.? Then your passport will be ready after 2 working days. For example: if you apply on Monday before 14.00 hrs., you can collect it on Wednesday. You will pay extra for this. You will need a number of things at the appointment. Take the following things with you. Only then will we be able to serve you properly.

All of your identity cards and passports

Do you have an identity card and a passport? Take everything with you. Even if they are expired or foreign.

A colour passport photo which meets the requirements

A bank card

You pay for your application at the municipal counter. At most of the municipal offices you can only use a bank card. You can pay in cash only at City Hall Spui. It is not possible to pay with a credit card.

Is the passport for a child younger than 12 years? The child must attend the appointment and needs written permission from both parents

Written permission is needed from the people with parental responsibility. This is usually the parents. But it can also be a guardian. Read what is needed for your situation on the page Begin link: Consent for passport for children younger than 12 years, end link.

The municipality is required to take fingerprints from you during the appointment. Make sure that your hands are clean, for example without any paint residue. Read more on the Begin external link: website of the Government of the Netherlands(External link), end external link..

Your passport will be ready after 6 working days. You have 3 months to collect your passport. After that it will be destroyed.

You must pick up your passport yourself at the city office where you applied for it. Nobody else is allowed to do this for you. You do not need to make an appointment.

  • Your pick-up receipt
    This is proof of your application. It states when you can collect the passport.
  • Your current passport, even if it has expired
    You will need to turn it in.

Is the passport for a child younger than 12 years? Then a parent must accompany the child

Children must always collect their own passport. As of the age of 12 a child may do this alone. He/She does not need to be accompanied by a parent. Is the child younger than 12 years? Then he/she is not allowed to come alone. The child must collect the passport together with 1 of the following people:

  • 1 of the people with parental responsibility. The parents usually have parental responsibility. 
  • Or: A different person with parental responsibility, for example a guardian. 
  • Or: An adult accompanying the child who is at least 18 years old and has written permission from a parent or the person with parental responsibility. And a copy of a valid identity document for this person. The signature on the identity document must match the signature on the consent form.

A passport is valid for 10 years if you are 18 years or older when you apply. If you are younger than 18 years when you apply, then it is valid for 5 years. You are allowed to renew your passport at any time. You do not have to wait until it has expired.

Do you travel often? Apply for a business passport. This is a passport with more pages (66 pages instead of 34 pages). You apply for it in the same way as a regular passport. If you apply for a business passport, you are not allowed to also apply for a regular passport. A business passport costs the same as a regular passport.

Your birth name will always remain in your passport and identity card. Even if your civil status changes.

Are you married or do you have a civil partnership? You can have the surname of your partner put on the document. This can be written in 3 ways:

  • e/v: husband or wife of
  • p/v: partner of
  • w/v: widow or widower of

The name of your partner will be printed after the abbreviation.

You are never allowed to throw away or destroy your passport. You must turn it in when you get a new document. The passport remains the property of the state. You can also ask the municipality to invalidate it so that you can keep the old document.

Has somebody close to you died? Then you have to turn in the passport to the municipality. You can do this at the reception desk in City Hall Spui or the Leyweg City Office.

Yes, you can. Make an appointment and indicate under the number (‘aantal’) how many passports you need. For example, 4 passports for 4 family members. Extra time will then be reserved for you.

Young people as of the age of 12 years may apply for and collect their passport themselves. Written permission is needed from the people with parental responsibility. This is usually both parents. 

Children younger than 12 years are not allowed to come on their own. They must be accompanied by at least 1 person with parental responsibility. Usually the parents have parental responsibility. Written permission from all people with parental responsbility is required for the application.
