We are currently working hard on the future of Scheveningen. We are widening the beach and building a new, strong dyke topped by a brand new boulevard. Scheveningen will become safer and more attractive. The work is due for completion in the summer of 2013.
A project of this size does involve a certain degree of inconvenience. But you can still come to Scheveningen to enjoy the sun, beach and recreation in the coming years.
Wide sandy beaches and undulating sand dunes give the Dutch coast a special allure. The light, the landscape and the entertainment appeal to Dutch and international visitors alike. The Dutch coast is well cared for. Not just because we want to enjoy it, but also because the coast protects us from the water.
A large part of the Netherlands is located below sea level and is therefore at constant risk of flooding. Dunes, dykes and other water works along its coastline ensure that the Netherlands remains a safe place to live. However, due to the changing climate, certain places on the coast will in time no longer be equipped to deal with extreme weather conditions. Therefore the Dutch government is reinforcing these ‘weak links’; the coast of Scheveningen is one of them.
In order to protect the surrounding countryside from flooding in the future, a new dyke is being constructed and the beach has been widened. But this is not all. The Municipality of The Hague plans to combine the coastal reinforcement with a complete makeover of the resort. The showpiece is a brand new boulevard with a panoramic view over the sea from different levels.
In 2013 Scheveningen will still be a bustling seaside resort, but safer and even more attractive than before. A resort worth visiting in all seasons!
