Homeless Help Desk: help for the homeless

The municipality helps homeless people in The Hague. The Homeless Help Desk (Dak- en Thuislozenloket) will listen to your story. And you will get help and information there. Are you homeless or houseless or facing homelessness? Come to the Homeless Help Desk. Are you an aid worker? Then register your client at the desk.

It can happen to anyone, for any number of reasons: homelessness. You are not in it alone. Whatever your situation, help is always nearby. Are you at risk of becoming homeless or are you already homeless? If so, there is a lot you need to arrange. You can go to the Homeless Help Desk with all your questions. During a talk which takes about 20 minutes, we will find out what kinds of help can improve your situation.

  • Are you urgently looking for a safe place to sleep? Then visit the Homeless Help Desk. You will hear if there is a place available.

    I am not from The Hague, where can I go?

    The Homeless Help Desk of the Municipality of The Hague helps people from The Hague, Rijswijk, Leidschendam-Voorburg, Wassenaar and Zoetermeer. Are you from the Delft, Midden-Delfland, Westland or Pijnacker-Nootdorp region? Then you may be able to go to PerspeKtief's night shelter.     Night shelter or a place to stay for homeless persons from Central and Eastern Europe

    The Polish Barka Foundation helps homeless migrant workers. It will help you with returning to your country of origin, care and shelter. During the process, you will stay at the Leger des Heils at Binckhorstlaan 115. You will receive assistance in your own language.

    Conditions

    The shelter is for migrant workers who:

    • are homeless, and
    • come from Poland, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania or another EU country, and
    • are not entitled to social benefits such as welfare.

    Do you meet the conditions? Then you can contact the Barka Foundation. You can also visit the Homeless Help Desk. There you can make an appointment for an initial interview at the Barka Foundation.

  • Perhaps you have lost your job and no longer have an income. The staff at the Homeless Help Desk will look into whether you are eligible for welfare. Then come to the Homeless Help Desk.
  • How do I get inexpensive health insurance?

    Living on a small budget is not easy. The municipality offers affordable health insurance, especially for people with a low income. This is the Low-cost health insurance from municipality.

    Basic medical care for the homeless (Haagse Straatdokter)

    Are you homeless, in need of medical care and no longer able to visit your general practitioner (GP)? If so, you can register with the Haagse Straatdokter. Even without health insurance.

    You will find the Haagse Straatdokter at the following locations:

    1. Gezondheidscentrum Vaillantplein

      For homeless persons who have not seen a GP for a long time and/or need regular medical care. Would you like to make use of this service? Then come to the Homeless Help Desk. The staff members will sign you up with a registration form. After that, you can make an appointment with the Haagse Straatdokter yourself.

    2. Night shelter of the Kessler Stichting

      Address: Delagoastraat 60, The Hague. Tel.: (070) 850 05 00.

      For homeless persons who are sleeping in the night shelter and are already registered at Gezondheidscentrum Vaillantplein. Would you like to make use of this service? Then come to the Homeless Help Desk of the night shelter of the Kessler Stichting. The staff members will make an appointment for you. A doctor is available every Tuesday as of 16.00 hrs.

    Dentist

    If you are homeless, you can visit a special dentist for essential medical treatment. The following conditions apply:

    • You have problems with addiction and/or psychiatric problems.
    • You have basic health insurance.
    • You are already registered at the Homeless Help Desk.

    Only care providers or aid workers can register a homeless person for the dentist's consultation hours. They do this through the Reporting Code (Meldcode).

    Advice for care providers to illegal residents

    Do you provide medical care to people who are in the Netherlands illegally? And do you need advice or have questions about, for example, getting reimbursed for costs?   • Are you homeless and are you unable to receive your postal mail at the home address of a friend, acquaintance or family member? The Homeless Help Desk may be able to help you get a mailing address. This is an address where you do not live but you do receive post. You can contact the Homeless Help Desk by calling tel. (070) 353 72 91. Or drop in during the walk-in hours at Fruitweg 17.

For young people:

  • Are you a young person and homeless? The municipality is there to help you. For example, by working together with you to improve your situation. With a place to sleep, a mailing address or with welfare. And with helping you to find work. Visit the Homeless Help Desk.
  • Do you urgently need a safe place to sleep? The Leger des Heils offers 24-hour shelter for young people between the ages of 18 and 23 from The Hague region. Men can come to Nieboerweg 125 in The Hague. Women to Noordpolderkade 163 in The Hague. To arrange shelter, first visit the Homeless Help Desk at Fruitweg 17 in The Hague. There you will hear if there is a sleeping place available.
  • Straat Consulaat

    Are you nervous about talking to an aid worker right away? The Straat Consulaat holds consultation hours for young homeless people at the Jongeren Informatiepunt every Thursday from 10.00 to 12.00 hrs. You can talk to a young volunteer who has experience with homelessness. And talk to a support worker from the Straat Consulaat.

    Jeugd Interventieteam

    The Jeugd Interventieteam (Youth Intervention Team) helps young people between the ages of 12 and 26. For example, if there are problems with their living situation, work, education, money and debts, family and friends or health. Visit www.hetjit.nl.

    Jongeren Informatiepunt

    The Jongeren Informatiepunt (Youth Information Point) provides free information, advice and help to young people between the ages of 12 and 27. For example, with questions about housing, work, education, your rights, money, addiction, sex and health. Visit www.jiphaaglanden.nl.

  • The Homeless Help Desk of the Municipality of The Hague helps people from The Hague, Rijswijk, Leidschendam-Voorburg, Wassenaar and Zoetermeer. Drop in during the walk-in hours.

  • Aid workers can register clients for social services at the Homeless Help Desk. There are 3 possibilities: 24-hour facilities, sheltered housing and Housing First.

    1. 24-hour facility

    The maximum length of stay in a 24-hour facility is always 6 months. After you have submitted your report, the staff of the Homeless Help Desk will assess whether the application is suitable. The Homeless Help Desk handles the screening and referral for the following 24-hour facilities:

    Would you like to register a client for a 24-hour facility? Use the Reporting Code. Reports received on Friday before 12.00 hrs. will be discussed on the following Tuesday. The outcome will be ready on Tuesday after 14.00 hrs. The person making the report can ask for the outcome or status of the case by calling tel. (070) 353 72 91.

    2. Sheltered housing

    Sheltered housing is suitable for clients who need intensive supervision and who have complex problems. The supervisor must be able to demonstrate that the client has psychiatric, psycho-social, addiction or mental health problems. Sheltered housing can be a solution if a 24-hour facility with a maximum stay of 6 months is not adequate.

    3. Housing first

    Housing First Den Haag is intended for long-term homeless residents of The Hague with a combination of problems. For example, psychological problems combined with addiction. To be admitted, your client must meet the following admission criteria:

    • Your client has been homeless for a long time.
    • Your client has been receiving help for a long time.
    • Your client is unable to live together with other people (unsuitable for group housing).

    Suitable housing will be sought for clients who qualify for Housing First. They will be provided with intensive supervision by Limor or the Leger des Heils. Housing First is a collaboration between the municipality, Limor and the Leger des Heils.

    Register

    Would you like to register a client for Housing First? Make a report through the Reporting Code. You will be notified about your registration on the 2nd Tuesday of the month. This deadline for notification starts from the time of your report before noon on the 1st Friday of the month.

Good to know

You are not yet homeless but you are facing eviction from your home? For example because you are behind in paying the rent? Do not wait. Visit the SZW Advice and Information desk as soon as possible. It is often possible to prevent eviction.
