Request a birth certificate
Request a copy of the certificate in the municipality where you were born. You can choose between a copy in Dutch or an international multiple-language extract.
What it is
A birth certificate is the written proof that you were born. The municipality where you were born keeps this certificate in the Civil Registry.
- A copy of a certificate is an official copy of the record. The copy is only in Dutch.
- An extract of a certificate is a summary of the record. An international extract in multiple languages includes explanations in 10 languages: Dutch, English, French, German, Spanish, Greek, Italian, Portuguese, Turkish, and Serbo-Croatian.

Were you born abroad? You can Begin link: convert your foreign certificate into a Dutch certificate, end link. in the Civil Registry Office of the Municipality of The Hague. Afterwards you can request a copy or extract.
Who can apply
You can apply for the certificate for yourself or for 1 of the following persons:
- your children or grandchildren
- your parents or grandparents
- your beneficiaries
- your spouse
- your registered partner
- someone for whom you are the legal representative (you may make decisions for them)
- someone who has authorised you (has given permission)
Needed to apply
A copy of the proof of identity of the applicant
Only needed if you apply without logging in with DigiD.
Proof of payment for the certificate
For example, a bank statement.

Are you requesting the birth certificate for someone else? Sometimes you need extra documents. Check when this applies and what you need.
You are authorised
For your application, you also need:
- a copy of the ID of the person who gave you the authorisation (the grantor)
- a completed authorisation form

- a document that shows you are the legal representative. For example, a decision from the court.

- a copy of the certificate of inheritance. You can get this from the notary.

How can I have a Dutch certificate translated?
Do you need to have the document translated? You can have it translated by a sworn translator.

Can I use the document abroad?

Do I need a birth certificate to travel with children?
