Remigration, renounce Dutch citizenship

Are you returning to your country of birth and do you have both Dutch citizenship and another citizenship? Then you must renounce your Dutch citizenship if you qualify for a remigration benefit.

  • You have both Dutch citizenship (nationality) and another citizenship.
  • You qualify for a remigration benefit. You are not receiving a remigration benefit? Then you do not need to renounce your Dutch citizenship.

  • Dutch passport and/or Dutch identity card
  • Letter from the Sociale Verzekeringsbank (SVB) about the procedure for renouncing Dutch citizenship.

Neither the SVB nor the municipality charges for this procedure. However, you will pay a sum to the IND (Immigration and Naturalisation Service) to apply for your residence permit.

After you have renounced Dutch citizenship, your data will be changed immediately in the Personal Records Database (BRP). The SVB will complete the rest of the procedure.

  • At the same time, make an appointment at the IND to request a residence permit in the Netherlands. For more information, see Begin external link: link), end external link..
  • During your appointment at the Department of Public Service, afdeling Naturalisatie en Optie, you will sign a statement of renunciation of Dutch citizenship.
  • The municipality will change your details in the BRP.
  • The SVB will take care of the rest of the remigration procedure.
