Apply for a climate adaptation subsidy (for rainwater harvesting)

Would you like to construct a ‘green roof’ or place a rain barrel in your garden? Or do you want to disconnect your downspout or replace your garden tiles? Then apply for a subsidy.

You can apply for a subsidy until 31 December 2023. A total budget of € 250,000 is available for this subsidy. Once the subsidy amount has been used up, the measures will stop. You will no longer be able to submit an application. This page will be updated accordingly.

Who is it for?

This subsidy is for:

  • owners or tenants of a residential property
  • owners or tenants of a building (such as a business, school, neighbourhood centre or housing association)
  • homeowners associations (Verenigingen van Eigenaren (VvEs))

How it works

You can harvest rainwater by:

  • constructing a green roof (roof covered with plants)
  • placing a rain barrel or a rainwater fence
  • disconnecting the downspout from the sewer system (and for example diverting the water into a pond)
  • replacing paving stones with grass or plants

How much subsidy

  • You get a refund for 50% of the costs for harvesting rainwater.
  • You can get a maximum of € 500 per cubic metre of water which you collect. You get a total of at least € 500 and no more than € 50,000 per application.
  • Do you have a valid Ooievaarspas? Then all of the costs will be refunded.

For example: Constructing a green roof of 20 square metres with many plants costs € 2,400. You get € 500 per cubic metre of water which you collect. The green roof in this example can absorb 60 litres  of rainwater per square metre. In total (20 x 0.06) you can collect 1.2 cubic metres of water. With this subsidy (1.2 x € 500) you will get € 600 euro. (You do not have an Ooievaarspas.)

Which costs will be refunded?

All of the costs which are needed to carry out the project will be compensated. The following costs will not be reimbursed:

  • costs paid by the municipality for a green roof
  • costs paid from other measures, such as a subsidy from the Delfland Water Board (Hoogheemraadschap Delfland)
  • costs for structures such as roof constructions or a roof cover
  • costs for removing and replacing existing plants
  • costs for removing and replacing permeable surfaces, such as gravel. Except for work on a newly constructed building.
  • costs for you own hours or the labour costs for the applicant's workers

Conditions

The subsidy is only for homes or buildings in the following neighbourhoods:

  • Schildersbuurt-Noord
  • Schildersbuurt-West
  • Zuidwal
  • Bezuidenhout Oost
  • Huygenspark
  • Rond de Energiecentrale
