Renewing tram lines

The municipality, the Rotterdam-The Hague metropolitan area and HTM are working together on the public transport of the future. Tram lines 1, 6, 12 and 16 are being adapted in order to meet this goal.

Low-floor trams are operating in the city. People using wheelchairs or walkers can travel independently with these trams. The HTM is going to purchase more low-floor trams. They will replace the outdated trams which are still operating in the city.

Modifications to tram lines

Not all tram tracks and tram stops in The Hague are suitable for low-floor trams. This is why the rails need to be shifted in many streets. A number of bends along the line also need to be adapted. Modifications are needed for tram lines 1, 6, 12 and 16.

The stops will also be adapted. They will be made longer and suitable for people using wheelchairs or walkers. Where possible, the municipality will combine the work on the tram lines with other work. For example, fixing up public spaces, roads, bridgs, and quays.

The municipality will modify the tram tracks and the tram stop in the Duinstraat. It will affect the section between the Sloepstraat and Scheveningseweg. During the project, the municipality will also improve other parts of the street. The work on tram line 16 is ready. The tram has not been operating from the city centre to the Statenkwartier for a year. Previously Tram 16 operated on this route, now it is Tram 17.

Now that the work is ready, the municipality is testing the new tracks, overhead cables and stops. Work will still be carried out in the coming time on the sidewalks and parking spots in various places.

The tram is not yet operating via the Torenstraat and Zoutmanstraat. The summer timetable will begin on 8 July 2023. From that moment Tram 17 will again operate its regular route from Wateringen, via the city centre to Scheveningen.
