Authorise somebody to vote on your behalf

Are you unable to vote yourself on 6 June 2024? Then you can give somebody permission to vote on your behalf. You give that person an authorisation (proxy).

The person voting on your behalf (the authorised person) may vote on behalf of a maximum of 2 other people. The authorised person can only cast the proxy vote(s) at the same time he casts his own vote.

Authorise somebody

You can authorise somebody in 2 ways: by using the back of the voting pass or by using a written authorisation.

Using the voting pass (onderhandse volmacht)

  • Ask somebody who also lives in The Hague to vote on your behalf.
  • Fill out the back of your voting pass. You will receive the voting pass 3 weeks before the election day.
  • You and the person voting on your behalf (the authorised person) both have to sign the voting pass.
  • The person voting on your behalf takes the completed and signed voting pass with him to the polling station. The person casts your vote at the same time he casts his own vote.
  • When casting the vote, the person voting on your behalf has to show (a copy of) your identity document. This person can also show your identity document on a smartphone or tablet.
The person you authorise to vote on your behalf by using the voting pass must also live in The Hague.

Written authorisation (schriftelijke volmacht)

Will you be abroad for sometime? Or would you like to authorise somebody who does not live in The Hague? Then you can use a written authorisation. You can request the written authorisation before you get your voting pass. Will you be living in The Hague on 23 April 2024? Then you can request the written authorisation at the municipality. The municipality will process your request after 23 April 2024. It will then be able to check whether you have the right to vote in this election.

Send or submit form on time

  • Are you sending the form by email or by post? Then it must arrive at the municipality no later than Monday, 3 June 2024.
  • Are you the person giving the authorisation and are you submitting the form at the election counter? This is possible until 17.00 hrs. on Monday, 3 June 2024.

After you apply

Has your request been approved? Then the person voting on your behalf will get a legal proxy (volmachtbewijs). This person can use this to vote on your behalf. If he has a written authorisation, the authorised person does not need to show an identity document for you.
