Renew driving licence
Your driving licence shows the date it expires. If your licence has expired, you are not permitted to drive. Renew your driving license online in 5 steps and pick it up after 2 working days. Or request it at a municipal counter.
You can renew your driving licence online. Or you can make an appointment to renew your driving licence at the municipal counter at City Hall Spui or the Leyweg City Office. You will pay the fees when you apply. You will be able to collect your driving licence when it is ready. You do not need to make an appointment to collect it. You will need to turn in your old driving licence.
- You are registered in the Municipality of The Hague.
- You have Dutch citizenship (nationality) or a valid residence permit. Or you are a citizen of 1 of the EU countries or EEA countries(External link) or Switzerland.
- Your driving licence has not been confiscated by the police. Read more on the website of the Dutch government(External link).
- A passport photo: strict rules apply to the passport photo. Read these requirements on the website of the Dutch government(External link).
- A valid form of identification and your old driving licence. Is your driving licence still valid and clearly readable? Then you may also use it as a valid form of identification.
- Has your old driving licence been lost or stolen? Fill in a declaration of loss when you apply to renew your driving licence. You can read all about it under Stolen or lost passport, driving licence or identity card.
- In certain situations you first need to request for a Statement of Health (gezondheidsverklaring) from the Central Office for Motor Vehicle Driver Testing (CBR). This is required if:
- you are 75 years of age or older, or your driver’s license expires on or after your 75th birthday
- you have a driving licence with a shorter validity period on medical grounds
- you want to renew a driving licence in category C and/or D

You can only apply online using the DigiD app(External link) and an Android mobile telephone (version 6.0 or higher) or an iPhone (model 7 or higher and iOS version 13) with an NFC reader for contactless payments.
The Dutch Road Transport Directorate (RDW) will notify you when you can collect the driving licence. Pick up your driving licence yourself. You can do this without an appointment at City Hall Spui or the Leyweg City Office. You select the pick-up location when you apply. Take your old driving licence with you when you go to collect your new one. You will have to turn in the old one.
At a municipal counter
- Make an appointment to renew your driving licence.
- Go to your appointment at the Department of Public Service counter at City Hall Spui or the Leyweg City Office. You will pay the fees when you apply.
- Pick up your driving licence yourself. You can do this without an appointment at City Hall Spui or the Leyweg City Office. Your driving licence will be ready for you at the location where you submitted the application. Take your old driving licence with you. You will have to turn it in.
Rates from 1 July 2023:
- application for a driving licence: € 48.15
- application for a driving licence expedited procedure: € 48.15 + € 34.10 = € 82.25
- Did you apply for the driving licence online? Then you usually can pick it up after 2 working days. The RDW will send you a notification.
- Did you apply for the driving licence at the municipal counter? Then you can collect it after 5 working days. The pick-up receipt will state as of when you can collect the driving licence.
- Do you need your driving licence quickly? Then you should use an expedited procedure. You will then wait a maximum of 2 working days (if you submit the application before 14.00 hrs.). This procedure is more expensive.
Pick up the driving licence within 3 months after you apply for it. After that the document will be invalidated and the municipality will be obliged to destroy it.
Validity
The driving licence shows the date it expires.
You are advised to renew your licence before the expiry date. If you do not do this, your driving licence will expire and you will not be permitted to drive.
The driving licence is valid for a maximum of 10 years. The validity depends on:
- your age
- the category of the driving licence
- medical grounds for a driving licence with a shorter validity period

Collecting the driving licence
You must pick up your driving licence yourself. Nobody else is allowed to do this for you. You can collect your driving licence at the city office where you applied for it. You do not need to make an appointment to collect it.
You live outside of the Netherlands
Do you live outside of the Netherlands and would you like to renew your Dutch driving licence? Then you should not contact the municipality but rather the Dutch Road Transport Directorate (RDW).
Turn in the licence after a death
Did a family member die? Then you are allowed to turn in the driving licence at the municipality. You can do this at the reception desk in City Hall Spui or the Leyweg City Office.
