Valid Dutch identity document for Dutch voters abroad

Are you registered as a Dutch voter abroad? And would you like to vote in the Dutch parliamentary election or European Parliament election? You must send a copy of a valid identity document together with your vote. You will also need this document to authorise someone to vote on your behalf. Or if you will vote in the Netherlands yourself with a voter card.

Valid identity documents

This is a valid Dutch identity document:

  • Dutch passport
  • Dutch identity card
  • Identity card for Bonaire, Sint Eustatius or Saba
  • Identity card for Aruba, CuraƧao or Sint Maarten which states that you have Dutch nationality.

Do you need to apply for a new identity document? Due to the coronavirus it may take more time to get an appointment at an embassy or consulate. Do you not yet have a valid identity document? Then make an appointment on time.

Automatic loss of Dutch citizenship

Do you have Dutch nationality and would you like to take on a 2nd or additional nationality? Or do you already have more nationalities than only the Dutch nationality? In these cases you can automatically lose your Dutch nationality.
