Valid Dutch identity document for Dutch voters abroad

Are you registered as a Dutch voter abroad? And would you like to vote in the Dutch parliamentary election or European Parliament election? You must send a copy of a valid identity document together with your vote. You will also need this document to authorise someone to vote on your behalf. Or if you will vote in the Netherlands yourself with a voter card.

Valid identity documents

A Dutch identity document can be

  • a valid Dutch passport
  • a valid Dutch identity card
  • a valid identity card for Aruba, Curaçao or Sint Maarten which states that you have Dutch nationality

  • a valid identity card for Bonaire, Sint Eustatius or Saba
  • an emergency passport
  • a laissez-passer which shows that you have Dutch nationality.

You are also permitted to enclose 1 of the above documents if they expired no more than 1 year ago (still valid on 1 February 2020). This does not apply to the emergency passport and laissez-passer. You can only send an expired identity document together with a Dutch nationality certificate, which was issued no more than 1 year before 17 March 2021. You can apply for a Dutch nationality certificate via the website netherlandsworldwide.nl. You are allowed to write on the copy that it is a copy intended for this election.

You are permitted to hide your citizen service number (BSN), passport number and passport photo on the copy and to write ‘KOPIE’ on it. Make sure that you surname, signature, date of birth and expiry date are readable.

It takes an average of 3 weeks to process your application. State in your application that you need the certificate in order to vote. It will then get priority.

On the website of the Dutch government you can read how to prevent fraud with a copy of your proof of identity. Or use an app to make a safe copy of your identity card, passport or driving licence.

Would you like to apply for a new identity document? Due to the coronavirus it may take more time to get an appointment at an embassy or consulate. Do you not yet have a valid identity document? Then make an appointment on time.

Automatic loss of Dutch citizenship

Do you have Dutch nationality and would you like to take on a 2nd or additional nationality? Or do you already have more nationalities than only the Dutch nationality? In these cases you can automatically lose your Dutch nationality.
