The Hague has ten city farms, or petting zoos, where children of all ages can get up close and personal with a whole array of farm animals. The city farms are also places where people in the neighbourhood can meet one another.

Cows and goats roam freely at the Schildershoeve.

These special small-scale farms raise a variety of animals and welcome young visitors and their parents. Stop by and pet a pig, see a cow being milked, or feed a rabbit -- there are all kinds of things to learn and do for kids of all ages.

Municipal city farms

Below is a list of the city  farms (Stadsboerderijen) run by the Municipality of The Hague. They are open Tuesday to Sunday from 9.00 to 17.00 hours. They are closed on Monday.

All the city farms can be reached by public transportation and offer seasonal activities for young and old such as sheep shearing, willow craft work and Easter egg hunts. Often there are small exhibitions on nature and the environment.

Sustainable through wind energy

A number of city farms in The Hague have a wind turbine, a Turby. A wind turbine allows the city farm to use renewable energy. A Turby supplies nearly enough electricity to power a household. The Municipality of The Hague announced in 2010 that it wanted to become a carbon-neutral organisation, which means that it will use as little energy as possible and, when possible, make use of clean energy sources such as wind, water and sun.
