Registration procedures for asylum seekers
Are you coming from abroad, are you an asylum seeker and will you be staying in The Hague for more than 4 months? Then you need to register in the Personal Records Database (BRP).
- You are an asylum seeker.
- You will be staying in The Hague for longer than 4 months.
- In order to register you must have a valid residence permit or a valid foreign nationals identity document. See the information under Begin external link: Foreign Nationals Identity Document (Type W and W2)(External link), end external link. on the website of the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND).

- your valid foreign nationals identity document or residence permit
- a Begin link: proof of occupancy, end link.
- a custody order for unaccompanied minor asylum seekers (under 18 years)
If you are in possession of the following document, please it with you to the appointment:
- a recently-issued original birth certificate
- Make an appointment online.
- When you make the appointment fill in the correct place of residence. This is the address you want to use for registration.
- Indicate how many people will be at the appointment.
- All of the people need to attend the appointment in person.
Fees
Free.
After the first appointment you will usually get a follow-up appointment. It takes up to 4 weeks after the follow-up appointment before you are registered in the BRP.
Documents from certain countries must be legalised or have an apostille (look at the Begin external link: website of the Government of the Netherlands(External link), end external link.).
Documents written in French, German or English are usually accepted. If there is any doubt, the municipality may ask for a Dutch translation. Do you need to translate the document? You can ask a sworn interpreter or translator to do it for you.
