Registration procedures for asylum seekers

What is it?

Are you coming from abroad to live in The Hague for longer than 4 months? Do you also hold a valid W-card or a valid residence permit? Then you need to register with the Municipal Personal Records Database (GBA). This is required by law.

What are the conditions?

  • You are an asylum seeker.
  • You will be staying in The Hague for longer than 4 months.

Asylum seekers

What will I need?

  • A valid W-card or residence permit.
  • An IND report of the initial and follow-up interview.
  • A relocation certificate from the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA).
  • Valid proof of identity. Please note: A driving licence will not be accepted as valid identification.
  • Proof of Occupancy.
  • A recently-issued original birth certificate. A recent original marriage certificate (if applicable). These documents will be reviewed while you wait.

Legalisation

Documents from certain countries must be legalised or provided with an apostille stamp. More information on this topic is available on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Translations

Documents from abroad which are not written in Dutch, French, German or English must be translated into Dutch by a sworn translator in the Netherlands.

The municipality will verify the authenticity of your identity documents.

How much will it cost?

This service is provided free of charge.

How long will it take?

Your GBA registration will be processed within 4 weeks of the follow-up appointment.

How do I apply/What do I need to do?

  • Call the Immigration Office in The Hague and make an appointment for the registration procedure.
  • You will need to attend the appointment in person. Do your family members need to register, too? Then they need to come along as well.
