Report an abandoned bicycle

You can report an abandoned bicycle to the municipality. It will ensure that the bicycle is cleared away.

Conditions

Different rules are in effect for parking bicycles in The Hague:

  • Throughout the entire city a bicycle may not be left standing unused on the same spot for longer than 28 days. If so, the municipality is allowed to remove it.
  • In the downtown area a bicycle may not be left standing unused on the same spot for longer than 7 days. If so, the municipality is allowed to remove it.
  • The municipality will remove a bicycle after 3 days if it is deemed a 'derelict bicycle':

    • if in all fairness it is no longer operable. Not because of a punctured tire, but because 1 or more parts are missing, broken or bent.
    • if there are signs that a bicycle has been neglected. For example, it is covered in a layer of dirt or dust.

Removing bicycles is not as simple as it seems. Every bicycle is somebody's property. The municipal surveillants are trained to pay attention to signs of neglect and are meticulous in their work.

    • An abandoned bicycle will first get a label.
    • Have the surveillants determined that the bicycle is a derelict bicycle? Then the owner will get 3 days to take the bicycle away himself.
    • Is the bicycle not a derelict bicycle? Then the surveillants will remove it after 28 days. The timetable can be found under Removing abandoned bicycles.
    • All bicycles will be taken to the Bicycle Depot Haaglanden.
