Apply for a subsidy for ‘green roofs’ 2020

Are you going to construct a roof covered with plants? Then you could get a subsidy from the municipality.

You can apply for a subsidy until 1 September 2022. A total of € 600,000 in subsidy funding is available. Once the subsidy funds have been used up, the measures will stop and you will no longer be able to apply. This information will be posted here on this page.

First see if your roof is suitable for the construction of a ‘green roof’. You can discuss this with a certified (roofing) company. Is your roof suitable? Then you can apply for the subsidy.

Due to the coronavirus you can get a response to your subsidy application by letter or email. For this reason you need to fill in your email address in your application. Do not miss the answer. Make sure to check your inbox.

Who is it for?

This subsidy is for owners of a home or property (such as businesses, schools, neighbourhood centres, housing corporations) and for homeowners associations (VvE).

Needed to apply

You need the following to apply:

  • a quotation from the supplier or builder who will construct the green roof.
    The quotation should specify that:
    - an extra membrane will be constructed on top of the existing layer to create a physical barrier in order to prevent root penetration (root barrier membrane)
    - the amount of water which the green roof is able to retain is at least 18 litres per square metre (water storage capacity)
  • a photo of the roof without vegetation
  • a copy of the most recent bank statement showing that the bank account is in the applicant’s name

    Maximum amount per application

For the construction of a ‘green roof’ you can get € 25 per square metre of green roof up to a maximum of 50% of the costs. The maximum total amount is € 20,000 per application. Once you are notified by the municipality that you will get a subsidy, you can go ahead with the construction of the green roof.

    • The green roof should be constructed professionally and in accordance with building regulations. If a structural adaptation is needed for the green roof, then you need a permit. A permit is also needed if the building is listed as a monument or has protected status and the green roof is visible from the street. You can enquire at the city district office whether you need a building permit for the adaptations and whether your building has protected status.
    • The roof you will be planting should have a minimum surface area of 10 square metres.
    • The green roof must have a minimum water storage capacity of 18 litres per square metre of green roof.
    • The roof slope is not more than 35° (degrees). There are special roofing kits on the market for slanted roofs to prevent sliding. You are advised to consult a certified company in order to select the right green roofing kit.
    • The green roof must have at least 1 root barrier membrane.

      How long does it take?

The municipality will notify you within 12 weeks after submitting your application.

The subsidy will be paid once the work has been completed and you have submitted an accountability form. You must submit this form no later than 6 months after the subsidy has been granted, before 1 November 2022 at the latest.

        Good to know

        When to construct the roof

A green roof can be constructed almost all year round. You can consult with your supplier to decide on which is the most favourable period for you.

Combine with subsidy for roof and/or floor insulation

In addition to the subsidy for a green roof you can also apply for the subsidy for roof and/or floor insulation (in Dutch). The combination of roof insulation with a green roof on top makes for a well-insulated home.
