Request a DigiD for Dutch citizens abroad

Are you a Dutch citizen, do you live abroad and did you deregister from a municipality in the Netherlands before moving abroad? Read how you can request a DigiD.

Request the DigiD in person

Are you a Dutch citizen, do you live abroad and did you deregister from a municipality in the Netherlands before moving abroad? Then for security reasons you may not request a DigiD via the DigiD website. You need to have a home address in the Netherlands in order to be registered in the Municipal Personal Records Database (BRP). You can request a DigiD in person in several municipalities, including The Hague.

Will you (soon) get the AOW (state pension)? Then you do not need to visit a counter in person. Apply for your DigiD through the Sociale Verzekeringsbank. You will receive the letter with your DigiD activation code at your foreign address.

Conditions

  • You live abroad.
  • You have Dutch nationality.
  • You have a valid Dutch passport or identity card.
  • You have a citizen service number (Burgerservicenummer/BSN).
  • You are registered as a non-resident of the Netherlands (RNI).
  • You have a mobile telephone on which you can receive text messages both abroad and in the Netherlands.
  • You have an email address.

Registered in the RNI

Do you pay taxes in the Netherlands? Or did you move abroad after 1 October 1994? Then for sure you are registered in the RNI. If you do not pay taxes in the Netherlands and you moved abroad before 1 October 1994 or you have never lived in the Netherlands, check at the municipal counter whether you are registered in the RNI.

For technical reasons, there must be at least 24 hours between your registration in the RNI (and receiving your BSN) and your appointment to request a DigiD for Dutch citizens abroad.

Apply

  • Go to www.digid.nl and select 'Aanvragen DigiD'.
  • During the application process, select 'Ik woon buiten Nederland’. Make sure you remember your user name and password.
  • After completing the application, you will receive a service desk code. Take the service desk code to 1 of the DigiD service desks within 30 days after the date of the application to receive your DigiD activation code. This can be done by appointment only.
  • Make an appointment at the Municipality of The Hague online or contact the municipality.
  • You can activate your DigiD at www.digid.nl using the activation code and your user name and password.

Make an appointment

It is not possible to authorise someone to request a DigiD at the service desk. You must visit the service desk in person and identify yourself with a valid Dutch travel document.

Needed at the appointment

  • your service desk code (you will receive this by text message and email after you submit your application).
  • your valid Dutch passport or identity card (you entered this document number in your application).
  • your citizen service number (BSN).

Counters

Go to DigiD to see which service desks (apart from those at the Municipality of The Hague) you can currently visit.

Using your old DigiD

If you already have a DigiD which you requested when you lived in the Netherlands, you can still use it if:

    • you still know your user name and password. If not, you must request a new DigiD at a service desk.
    • you used your DigiD within 3 years. Afterwards your DigiD expires and you need to request a new DigiD at a service desk.

      Questions

For more information, go to the website of DigiD. It contains the Frequently asked questions page and the DigiD issued over the counter fact sheet. If you cannot find an answer to your question, contact the DigiD help desk.
