The Hague named European Capital of Sport in 2022

More than a year ago The Hague and Lisbon presented their candidacy as European Capital of Sport in 2021. Both cities made an impression on the jury. This is the reason why both of them will get the title of Capital of Sport: Lisbon in 2021 and The Hague in 2022.

With its bidbook entitled ‘Sport makes The Hague stronger', The Hague was awarded the title of European Capital of Sport. The message of the bidbook is that sports in The Hague are from and for everyone, regardless of background, age and income.’ The Hague would like to motivate all city residents to do sports or get active by 2030..

The official title was awarded to The Hague on 6 December by ACES, the European Capitals and Cities of Sport Federation. The Hague can use the title to motivate its citizens to be active and stay active.

European Capital of Sport

The ‘European Capital of Sport’ title has been awarded since 2001 to cities with more than 500,000 residents and aim to give sports a bigger profile. It is comparable to the title of ‘European Capital of Culture’.

Previous sport capitals included Madrid, Stockholm, Rotterdam, Antwerpen, Istanbul, Valencia and Prague. Marseille is sport capital in 2017.
