Sportlaan shelter to move to Schenkweg

Published: 23 May 2019Modified: 27 May 2019

The temporary shelter for homeless people on the Sportlaan will move to the Schenkweg in Bezuidenhout in 2020. The facility in the former Juliana Children’s Hospital at Sportlaan 600 was available for only 2 years.

The first residents, people who do not (yet) have their own home or other place to live, will move into the new facility at Schenkweg 58-60 at the end of 2020. They will receive support from health professionals in such matters as housing and financing.

Transition to independent living

The facility on the Schenkweg, just like the facility on the Sportlaan, will be focused on people who are able to live independently. The new residents will get additional support and will be placed in another more independent form of housing within a year. The neighbourhood will be consulted on the plans and a specialised organisation will give guidance to the residents and manage the location.

Improving facilities and support

The municipality formulated a 10-point plan at the end of 2018 to improve the facilities and support for the city’s homeless. Over the coming years the municipality will realise new, small-scale living facilities throughout the city.
