SamenHaags app connects new and old residents

A new digital app will help newly-arrived residents in the city come into contact with ‘Haagse Makkers’ in a simple and safe way: through people who have lived in The Hague for a while and know their way around. This way newly-arrived residents can expand their social network more easily and learn Dutch more quickly. The SamenHaags app is meant to foster their integration. Deputy Mayor Rachid Guernaoui launched the app in ’t Haagse Huis in the Schilderswijk on 19 October.

The app stems from the SamenHaags programme. This municipal trial project started at the beginning of 2018. A new way of integrating citizens, newly-arrived residents are supported and stimulated to participate fully in Dutch society. Participants learn to speak Dutch as well as Dutch customs and practices, both in daily life as well as at work. Under the motto ‘Together we are The Hague’, SamenHaags provides language lessons, orientation to society, community work and a connection with a ‘Haagse Makker’.

The SamenHaags app makes it simpler for newly-arrived residents to find ‘Haagse Makkers’. Residents can also use the app to sign up to be a Haagse Makker. In addition to your name and age, you can share your hobbies and interests in the app. The idea is that shared interests in particular help newly-arrived residents in conversations and to expand their language skills and network. The app – previously tested in a small group and now officially launched – facilitates the ‘match’ and the first contact can be made via the chat feature (only if both participants give their permission).

The new app can be downloaded for free in Google Play (Android). The Apple app will soon be available.
