Open letter to all residents from deputy mayor about coronavirus

Published: 18 March 2020Modified: 18 March 2020

Information from Deputy Mayor Boudewijn Revis about the coronavirus to residents of The Hague.

Dear residents of The Hague,

New measures against the spread of the coronavirus have been in effect in the Netherlands, including The Hague, since Thursday, 12 March. The measures will have repercussions for the city and public life. It is understandable that you are concerned and that you have questions. We can limit the consequences of the virus only by working together. It is therefore essential that everybody sticks to the guidelines. This way the coronavirus will have as little chance of spreading as possible.

Dealing with the coronavirus sensibly

It is also important for us to remain calm, take responsibility for ourselves and take care of each other when possible. It is good to see that a number of initiatives have popped up spontaneously for this. This makes me proud of our city and gives us courage and faith that we will get through this situation. I see that our people in the healthcare sector are working hard. I have the greatest of respect for them.

It is important to take each other’s interests in consideration. We need to remain sensitive to the needs of elderly and vulnerable members of society. Help them in a responsible manner. In some cases this could mean staying in contact by telephone and in other cases this could mean actively helping out, for example by doing food shopping.

This will be a difficult time for many businesses, social institutions and organisations. After all, we are asking them to abide by the guidelines stipulated by the National Institute for Public Health (RIVM) while this could have a negative impact on their business. Nonetheless it is in everybody’s interest to make public health our top priority.

Municipal services

The municipality will try to maintain its level of service to the best of its ability. You can rest assured that municipal services on which residents are most dependent will continue.

At the same time the consequences of the virus could affect our services. I am counting on your understanding. We will inform you as quickly as possible through all available channels.

I am hoping that city residents who have contracted the coronavirus make a speedy recovery. We can get through this together.

Boudewijn Revis, deputy mayor
