New homeless shelter on Sportlaan

Published: 29 October 2018Modified: 30 October 2018

A temporary shelter for homeless people will open in the former Juliana Children’s Hospital at Sportlaan 600. This facility will operate for a maximum of 2 years. It will open at the end of December 2018.

The Municipality of The Hague is aiming to improve the facilities and support for the city’s homeless. A large group of people are now forced to use the night shelter because no other suitable accommodation is available. Over the coming years the municipality will realise new, small-scale living facilities throughout the city.  In the meantime these people will get temporary accommodation in the building on the Sportlaan.

Temporary residents

The facility will accommodate about 40 women and 50 men. The future residents will be carefully selected including on the basis of whether they can live independently. For example, they have no active addiction and do not disturb other people with strange behaviour. The residents will get professional support in matters such as housing and finances as well as finding work, a study or other activity.

Accommodation for 2 years

The building at Sportlaan 600 will be in use for temporary accommodation as of the end of December 2018 for a period of 2 years. Residents will be able to stay here for 24 hours a day. They will not be sent away in the morning but will be allowed to stay at the location the whole day. It is expected that the residents will be able to move to another more independent form of housing within a year.

Information evening

In follow up to the information meeting on 17 October, the municipality will hold an informal information evening on the temporary shelter on the Sportlaan. Neighbourhood residents are invited to come in and speak to the municipality about the plans.

  • Date: Thursday, 1 November 2018
  • Time: 19.15 to 21.00 hrs.
  • Location: Houtrustschool, Nachtegaalplein 19A

The municipality would like to know in advance how many people it can expect during the evening. Please register in advance by sending an email to: opvangsportlaan@denhaag.nl. This is not obligatory but will be appreciated.
