Machiel Vrijenhoeklaan-Sportlaan: trees being cut

Published: 13 February 2018Modified: 13 February 2018

Some 100 trees will be cut down on the Michiel Vrijenhoeklaan and the Sportlaan. All of the trees will be replaced by new trees which still need to be planted. The trees will be cut down between 19 February and 2 March 2018.

The municipality has a permit to cut down these trees. The trees need to be removed in order to prepare the area for a new design for the Kijkduin-Houtrust route (Noordwestelijke Hoofdroute). The route consists of the Machiel Vrijenhoeklaan (from the Kijkduinsestraat), Sportlaan and Segbroeklaan. Construction wil begin at the end of March 2018.

Planning

In the week of Monday, 19 February to Friday, 23 February the municipality will start removing trees around the Sportlaan between the intersection with the Wildhoeflaan/Daal-en Bergselaan and the intersection with the Kwartellaan/Segbroeklaan. The work will carry into the following week if it is not completed on time.

In the week from Monday, 26 February to 2 March the trees will be cut down in the area around the Machiel Vrijenhoeklaan, between the intersection with the Kijkduinsestraat and the intersection with the De Savornin Lohmanlaan.

The trees which need to be removed on the Sportlaan, between the intersection with the De Savornin Lohmanlaan and the intersection with the Wildhoeflaan/Daal- en Bergselaan will be left standing for the time being. They will be cut down at a later date. Area residents will receive a letter with information.

Inconvenience while trees are being cut down

The tree-removal activities will cause noise and traffic delays. The municipality will try to limit the inconvenience to a minimum. The trees will be cut down between 10.00 and 15.30 hrs.

Through traffic will be able to use the route. Traffic will be re-routed when part of the road is closed off. A temporary parking ban could be in effect in several spots to facilitate the tree-removal activities.

Why are the trees being cut down?

The municipality has to cut down trees due to the new design for the Kijkduin-Houtrust route. The road will look different in the new situation. The traffic lanes and sidewalks will shift over and an access road and cycle path will be created. Research has shown that it is not possible to transplant the trees. All of the felled trees will be replaced by new trees.
