If you are watching the Dutch channel NPO1 on New Year’s Eve, you will witness a live broadcast from The Hague. The NOS will broadcast the National Countdown (Nationaal Aftelmoment) at midnight this year from The Hague. Millions of people in the Netherlands will be able to watch a spectacular light and fireworks show on and above the Binnenhof and Hofvijver, with the skyline of The Hague in the background.

The NOS is organising the National Countdown this year for the fourth time. The first 3 years it was held at the National Maritime Museum in Amsterdam, with a fireworks display above the IJ. Mayor Pauline Krikke of The Hague is pleased that The Hague will set the stage this year:

"The Binnenhof with the Hofvijver is not only an icon of The Hague, but it is also the heart of our national democracy. It is an often photographed spot. I very much look forward to ring in the new year there together with the thousands of other spectators and the millions of people in the Netherlands who are watching it on television. And of course to be there to wish everyone a very happy new year!”

Thousands of spectators

The Hague has been organising a fireworks display at the Hofvijver for years. The event on 31 December will be held from 21.00 to 1.30 hrs. The Hague aims to make the location a local, festive and welcoming celebration. The thousands of spectators can enjoy music spun by a DJ and purchase drinks like Glühwein, prosecco and soft drinks at the Plaats and Buitenhof. In the days leading up to New Year’s Eve, starting on 28 December, a video projection can be seen on the facade of the buildings on the Binnenhof. The fireworks at midnight will be launched from pontoons and will be accompanied by a multimedia show with music, lights and video.
