City carilloneur to play special organ music on bell tower

City carilloneur Gijsbert Kok will play a number of special music pieces on the bells of the Grote Kerk on Friday, 1 December and Saturday, 2 December. This will mark the presentation of the Willem Pijper Award and the 70-year anniversary of the Johan Wagenaar Foundation.

On Saturday, 2 December composer Hugo Morales will receive the Willem Pijper Award for his composition 'Equid'. The municipality grants this award (together with the Johan Wagenaar Foundation) to a composition with a pioneering function. Deputy Mayor Joris Wijsmuller will hand over the award during the Dag in de Branding festival in the Nieuwe Kerk. On this day Slagwerk Den Haag will also perform Equid. Before the awards presentation city carilloneur Gijsbert Kok will play 'Utrechts Jolijt' by Johan Wagenaar at 19.30 hrs.

Special programme

On the occasion of the awards presentation and the 70-year anniversary of the Johan Wagenaar Foundation, Gijsbert Kok will perform on the bells of the Grote Kerk at 12.00 hrs. on Friday, 1 December. He will play the following pieces:

  • Johan Wagenaar (1862 - 1941) - Utrechts Jolijt
  • Johanna Wagenaar (1900 - 1990) - Kleine suite voor beiaard
  • Jan Wagenaar ((1896 - 1959) – Carillon
  • Willem Pijper (1894 - 1947) - Passepied

      These pieces all together will last a total of 18 minutes. At 13.00 hrs. the carilloneur will play pieces by other Dutch composers.
