The province of Zuid-Holland announced this in a press release (in Dutch).

The applicants – 19 men and 4 women – range in age from 23 to 63 years. Among them a number have experience in public administration. Other candidates have a business or other background.

Procedure for appointing new mayor

Jaap Smit, the King’s commissioner in Zuid-Holland, will make the dossiers complete, including requesting references, and will then interview a number of applicants. He will then confer with the confidential committee, which is made up of members of The Hague Municipal Council, on his findings. The commissioner is aiming to put together a broad high-quality selection of candidates. The confidential committee will then interview the selected candidates and will make a recommendation based on the profile drafted by the Municipal Council. The Municipal Council will then submit 2 candidates to the Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations, and declare its preference for 1 of the 2 candidates. In principle the minister will follow the recommendation by the municipality unless there are exceptional circumstances. The former mayor of The Hague, Pauline Krikke, resigned as of 9 October 2019. Acting mayor Johan Remkes will stay on until 1 July 2020.
