The Hague has 1 large internationally renowned production house in the Netherlands. Het Nationale Toneel (HNT) performs in theatres throughout the country, but its most important stages are the Koninklijke Schouwburg, National Theatre Building and Theater aan het Spui.

Het Nationale Toneel is dedicated to producing original adaptations of popular classics and works by young, contemporary playwrights. The theatre company stages plays but it also organises acting lessons, workshops, information evenings and public rehearsals.

In addition there are a number of smaller production houses:

  • A small but important cultural player in The Hague’s international community is STET The English Theatre.
STET produces and promotes high quality professional English language theatre in The Hague, with productions by international theatre companies. It works in close cooperation with the Koninklijke Schouwburg location and is responsible for the international programme of the studio theatre Het Paradijs. Each summer it brings open-air theatre performances to choice locations throughout the Netherlands.
  • Theatergroep Drang chooses to produce theatre at offbeat spots in and around The Hague and finds inspiration in the specific character and background of these changing locations. Its home base is the Drangstudio on the Schelpkade.
  • Literary Theatre Branoul on the Maliestraat exudes the atmosphere of the small theatres in Paris and Berlin. The performances are marked by an encounter between literature and theatre.
  • Firma Mes consists of 4 young theatre makers, all of whom graduated from the Maastricht Academy of Dramatic Arts in 2008. Since then they have been producing challenging and expressive performances at special locations and in theatres.

Youth theatre

  • NT Jong (formerly Stella Den Haag) is the youth theatre of Het Nationale Toneel. NT Jong creates performances for children as of 5 years old under the artistic direction of Noël Fischer. The company regularly teams up with the Residentie Orkest.
  • Rabarber is the children’s theatre school of The Hague and region. Children and young people aged 7 to 26 years can take singing, dancing and acting lessons. For 25 years Rabarber students have found work in the Dutch theatre and film world.
  • Muziektheater Briza is a multicultural theatre group based in the Zeeheldenkwartier. Briza makes productions for children and young people using live music and dance and video animation.
  • Kooman’s Puppet Theatre gives puppet show performances for children and their (grand) parents in an old brownstone on the Frankenstraat. The theatre started by Frank Kooman (1929-2011) has been well-loved over the last 50 years by generations of Hague residents.
