Treatment outside office hours

For medical treatment or advice by a general practitioner after hours and on weekends and holidays, contact SMASH.

SMASH stands for the Stichting Mobiele Artsen Service Haaglanden (Association of Mobile Doctors Service)  and is a partnership between all the general practitioners in The Hague, Leidschendam, Rijswijk, Voorburg, Voorschoten and Wassenaar.

You can contact the service every day between 17.00 and 8.00 hrs. as well as in the weekend and on all public holidays by calling: (070) 346 96 69.

SMASH is closed during office hours on Monday to Friday when regular doctors’ offices are open. It is not a walk-in clinic.

Who will assist you?

When you phone, you will be connected to a specially-trained doctor's assistant working under strict procedural guidelines.

The assistant will ask for the following information: patient's name, address, telephone number and date of birth.

Explain your problem to the assistant and, in many cases, she or he will be able to give you the advice you need, cross-checked with the on-duty doctor. If this does not solve your problem, the assistant will consult with one of the on-duty doctors and establish the best course of action: a consultation, a prescription or a home visit, for example.

If your medical situation requires immediate attention, you will get an appointment at one of the three after-hours GP centres in The Hague region. Make sure you take a valid proof of identity to your appointment.

Assessing the situation

If the patient's life is in danger, an ambulance will be contacted directly and you will receive necessary instructions.

In less serious situations, you will be asked about:

  • your question and/or complaint
  • the name of your regular GP
  • any medication the patient is using
  • whether the patient has a fever and, if so, how high
  • the patient's medical insurance information (insurer and policy number) and citizen service number (burgerservicenummer/BSN)

The bill for an after-hours medical consultation will be sent to your insurance provider. If you are not insured or you do not know your insurance details, SMASH will send the bill to you. The after-hours visit to the GP falls under your basic insurance policy.
Patients who are not residents of the Netherlands have to pay immediately at the GP centre.

Each of the GP centres has an after-hours pharmacy where you can have your prescription filled. Refill prescriptions will be issued only for urgent medication and only for a short period.
