Ban on (motor) bikes in downtown pedestrian area for part of day

As of 2 November bicycles and motorised bikes will no longer be allowed to ride everywhere in the downtown pedestrian area. When the shops are open, it is prohibited to cycle in the busiest shopping streets. The busiest streets are always off-limits to motorised bikes, even when the shops are closed.

Banning motorbikes and regular bicycles from the pedestrian area will allow visitors to have a more pleasant shopping experience.

Ban on (motor) bikes

The ban on bicycles in the busiest streets is in effect:

  • Every day from 11.30 to 18.00 hrs.
  • On Thursdays until 21.00 hrs.

The ban on motorised bikes is always in effect. This means 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Bicycles and motorised bikes will still have connecting routes through the downtown area. You can continue to cycle through the Grote Marktstraat. The Grote Marktstraat has been off-limits to motorised bikes already for some time.

Signs

The municipality has placed traffic signs in the area where there is a ban on (motor) bikes.

The pedestrian zone is indicated in pink. In dark green: the connecting routes for bicycles and motorised bikes. In light green: the connecting routes exclusively for bicycles (Nieuwstraat, Grote Marktstraat, Raamstraat, Achter Raamstraat and the Wagenstraat and Voldersgracht from the Grote Marktstraat towards Gedempte Gracht). In red: bicycles and motorised bikes prohibited (Passage and Bagijnestraat). Signs will indicate where the bicycle parking facilities are.

Bicycle parking

Are you cycling or coming by motor bike to the downtown area? Place your bicycle or motorised bike in 1 of the Biesieklette bicycle parking facilities around the pedestrian zone. The Biesieklette bicycle parking facilities are free and guarded. Unguarded bicycle parking facilities can be found on the Gedempte Burgwal and Wagenstraat.

Connecting routes

Would you like to cycle or ride your motorised bike through the downtown area to another area of the city? Take 1 of the connecting routes.

Enforcement

People who ride in the busiest shopping streets after the ban on (motor) bikes takes effect risk getting a fine. Municipal enforcers will actively check that cyclists are complying with the rules.

Why is there a partial ban on (motor) bikes in the downtown area?

Bicycles and motorised bikes are permitted to ride in the pedestrian area. Because it is busier in downtown The Hague than it used to be, (motor) bikes and pedestrians often get in each other’s way. A ban on (motor) bikes in the busiest streets will make it safer for pedestrians. Bicycles and motorised bikes can still ride quickly through the downtown area by using connecting routes. People who have to be downtown need to park their (motor) bike at the edge of the area. The ban on bicycles is not in effect the entire day. It starts at 11.30 hrs. every morning. Garbage trucks and delivery vans are also allowed to drive in the pedestrian area until 11.30 hrs. After the shops close at 18.00 hrs. (on Thursdays at 21.00 hrs.) bicycles are allowed everywhere again. The ban on motorised bikes applies the entire day.
