Intensive Dutch for foreign children

It is important for newly-arrived foreign children in The Hague to be able to learn Dutch well.

The child's school plays a pivotal role in the process of learning Dutch. In the Netherlands most children start primary school at the age of 4 years.

2.5 to 6 years

Is your child between the ages of 2.5 and 6 years old? Then he or she can go to 1 of the preschools in The Hague. Your child will learn Dutch at preschool.

6 to 12 years

Is your child between the ages of 6 and 12 years old? Then he or she can attend 1 of the 15 primary schools with a special reception class (opvangklas), which is specialised in teaching Dutch as a foreign language.
Your child will learn to speak, comprehend, read and write Dutch here. After the reception class, your child can then stay at the same primary school or switch to another primary school. The reception class is free of charge. The school will ask for a voluntary parental contribution as is customary at primary schools.
Children stay in the reception group until they have a good command of Dutch – generally after 1 year.
After a year the school will test the child's language ability. The school will then decide if the child can transfer to a regular primary school class.

12 to 18 years

Is your child between the ages of 12 and 18 years old? Then he or she can attend 1 of the 3 secondary schools with an international foundation class (internationale schakelklas). This class is mean for older children who have only just arrived in the Netherlands and speak little to no Dutch. Your child will get a great deal of extra language lessons in the international foundation class. Following the international foundation class your child can switch to a regular class at a secondary school.
