Chinese New Year Festival

On Saturday, 25 January the centre of The Hague will come alive with the excitement, sounds of fireworks and bold colours of the Chinese New Year Festival. Visitors can enjoy Chinese dancing, music, acrobatics and martial arts as well as a colourful parade through the streets of Chinatown.

To kick off the Year of the Rat, 2 large-scale celebrations of the Chinese New Year will take place in The Hague: the national celebrations in The Hague City Hall and the local celebrations on the Spui and in Chinatown (the area around the Wagenstraat and Rabbijn Maarsenplein).

All the festivities in The Hague are free of charge and open to the public.

City Hall

The Dutch national celebrations of the Chinese New Year are an annual event and take place this year for the 18th time. The programme will kick off at 10.00 hrs. with the lion and dragon dance procession starting from the Spuiplein, around City Hall and through Chinatown to the Plein.

This will be followed by an afternoon of entertainment in City Hall from 11.00 to 17.30 hrs. with jazz music, the official opening, artists from the Gansu Opera and Gansu Acrobatics Troupe, a performance by the Dutch pop grouup OG3NE and lots more entertainment by top Chinese and Dutch performers.

The festivities in Chinatown begin at 11.00 hrs. with a big Chinese New Year’s market with food, drinks and different children's activities on and around the Rabbijn Marsenplein. The traditional opening ceremony is at 12.45 hrs. on the Gedempte Burgwal.

A colourful cast of characters including Chinese lions and dragons will then make their way through Chinatown accompanied by the sounds of energetic drumming and exploding firecrackers. There they will usher in the New Year and chase away the spirits of the past year.
