Apply for driving licence after loss or theft

Have you lost your driving licence? Or has it been stolen? Apply for a new driving licence or a replacement at the municipality. A replacement driving licence will be valid until the same date as your missing driving licence.


  • You are registered in the Personal Records Database (BRP) of the Municipality of The Hague.

  • You may not operate a motor vehicle without a valid driving licence. This is allowed only once you have a replacement or new driving licence.

New driving licence

  • When you apply for a new driving licence, the same conditions apply as for renewing a driving licence.
  • Are you applying for a new driving licence and are you younger than 65? Then your driving licence is usually valid for 10 years.
  • Are there fitness requirements for a Statement of Health? Then you need to have a medical examination.

Replacement driving licence

A replacement licence will be valid until the same date as your old driving licence and you will not need a medical examination.

Report the missing or stolen driving licence online

Have you lost your driving licence, has it been stolen or is somebody misusing it? Report the missing licence to the RDW (in Dutch) before you apply for a new driving licence.

      Who is it for?

      • for people with a nationality of one of the EU or EEA member countries or Switzerland or
      • for people with a valid residence permit

      • a declaration of loss. You fill this in when applying at the city office
      • a passport photo
      The Dutch government has strict requirements for the passport photo. Read these requirements carefully.


        The application procedure is as follows:

        • You need to appear in person at the Department of Public Service counter at City Hall Spui or the Leyweg City Office. Make an appointment for this online.

          • You apply for a new driving licence or a replacement driving licence.
          • You pick up your driving licence in person at the city office where you applied for it. You must collect it within 3 months after you apply for it. After that the document will no longer be valid and the municipality will have to destroy it. If you would like a driving licence after this 3-month period, then you will have to apply and pay for it again.


            • Application for a driving licence: € 41
            • Expedited application for a driving licence: € 41 + € 34.10 = € 75.10

            These fees must be paid upfront when you submit your application. You can pay in cash or use a bank card at City Hall Spui. You can only use a bank card at the Leyweg City Office. Unfortunately it is not possible to pay with a credit card.

            How long does it take?

            • 5 working days.
            • Do you need your driving licence urgently? Then you may use the expedited procedure. You will receive your licence after a maximum of 2 working days (if you submit the application before 14.00 hrs.). This procedure is more expensive.
