Paying for on-street parking (residents)

Gepubliceerd: 01 januari 2012 Laatste wijziging: 12 maart 2012

In many of the city’s streets you have to pay for on-street parking. However, it is much easier and cheaper for you to park in one of the parking garages rather than on the street.

The parking guidance system leads you to the nearest parking garage with available parking capacity. The system covers parking garages in both the centre of the city and Scheveningen.

Here you can find an overview of paid on-street parking in The Hague. For information on arranging a parking permit for your neighbourhood, visit our information on Parking permits for residents.

Parking in the city centre

If you happen to drive to the centre of the city, your best option will be to park in one of the 20 multi-storey or underground parking garages which provide 6,500 parking spaces. Here you can download a PDF about the public parking garages in the city centre.

Parking in Scheveningen

The popular seaside resort of Scheveningen also operates a parking guidance system and has three multi-storey parking garages and two open car parks with a total of 4,500 parking spaces. Visit the website about the public parking facilities in Scheveningen.

Pay first on the street

Make sure that you insert sufficient money in the on-street parking ticket dispenser; otherwise you can expect to receive a gift in the form of a parking fine. This will mean that you will be required to pay € 54 in addition to the parking charge (1 hour).

If you park where it is prohibited, you will incur a fine from the Centraal Justitieel Incassobureau (Central Fine Collection Agency) rather than from the municipality. Click here for information about paying your fine.

If you do not agree with the parking ticket, you can appeal your fine (information in Dutch). In The Hague you are allowed to use the same valid parking ticket to park in other streets as long as the rate is the same or lower.

‘Chipknip’ and credit card

You can pay with coins at the 1,800 parking ticket dispensers and you can use a ‘chipknip’ (smart card) in addition to cash at 60 of them. These meters are located in the city centre, Scheveningen and a number of shopping streets. An overview of the streets where you can pay with a 'chipknip' can be found on the Dutch municipal site. A number of parking meters in the tourist areas of the city centre and Scheveningen also have a facility for paying by credit card.

Paying with your mobile phone

If you find you're often short of spare change, consider subscribing to the handy system of paying for on-street parking with your mobile phone. Subscriptions through Park-line are also valid in other large cities in the Netherlands including Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Groningen. Visit the website of Park-line, Parkmobile or Yellowbrick for more information about registration and step-by-step directions for using their call-up systems.

Warning:

These signs indicate where you must pay to park your car on the street. Rates and times for metered parking are specified on all on-street parking ticket dispensers and parking meters.

Please note that you must also pay for parking in the centre of The Hague and in Scheveningen in the evening and during the weekend.
