A joint 'Metropoollab' office was opened on 17 January as part of the plan to form a new metropolitan region within the Randstad.
In 2009 The Hague and Rotterdam pledged to combine forces in order to work at creating a metropolitan region with one giant urban authority called ‘Metropoolregio Rotterdam-Den Haag’.
The 'Metropoollab' is a special office in which government employees and municipal administrators from The Hague and Rotterdam as well as surrounding municipalities will work together to give shape to the metropolitan region.
The opening of the ‘Metropoollab’ located close to the Delft train station now makes this cooperation tangible. A total of 24 municipalities including The Hague and Rotterdam will join forces in the metropolitan region to reinforce its international competitive position.
This should soon lead to better accessibility for the region’s roads and public transportation. Measures will be introduced to improve education, innovation and the job market. Facilities in the areas of housing, culture, sports and events will be better geared to each other.
This joint approach to the economy, public space and mobility will make the new metropolitan region a European top region. It will also provide additional economic growth, which can amount to € 30 billion per year for the southern part of the Randstad region.
Residents of the area will see a direct benefit from the joint cooperation when the Metroopolitan pass (Metropoolpas) is introduced to everyone living in the region.
