Every year the Municipality of The Hague works to ensure that the beaches of Scheveningen and Kijkduin are kept pristine. This is a big job for the relevant municipal department (Vegen).
Every year thousands of people visit the beach. And from time to time they leave their garbage behind. Luckily there are rubbish bins everywhere and visitors make good use of them. On a summer day, however, the municipality can collect some 9 tons of litter from the beach.
Work is carried out mainly at night (lovers beware!), using a beach cleaner.
A beach cleaner looks like a riding sieve which combs the sand and collects the rubbish.
