The city's more than 20 skateparks are meant for skateboards as well as in-line skaters and often for BMX bikes. Skateboard facilities can vary from simple mini ramps to complete skateparks.
A 2004 study showed that 23% of the young people in The Hague between 7 and 18 years of age use the municipality's facilities for skateboarding. We're talking about 14,000 young people. The municipality aims to provide them good facilities so that they can skateboard, rollerblade and ride their BMX bike.
The municipality has divided this group into beginning and experienced skateboarders. Facilities are available for both groups. For beginners there are primarily smaller, independent skateboarding facilities such as a mini ramp or halfpipe. These kinds of facilities are located in each of the city's eight districts.
The city also aims to create more challenging facilities for more experienced skaters at its skateparks. The Hague has skateparks in Zuiderpark, Malieveld and on the Badhuiskade in Scheveningen.
A new indoor skatepark opened in The Hague in 2010. Skatepark SweatShop is located in a huge hall on the Binckhorstlaan in a former industrial building. The municipality agreed to rent the building for indoor skateboarding, in-line skating and BMX riders for a period of four years. The track and all the skateboarding elements are made of wood, which offers skaters a better grip than other materials.
There is also a bicycle motorcross (BMX) dirt track in the Van Stolkpark neighbourhood along the Haringkade in the park between the Haringkade and the Professor P.S. Gerbrandystraat in Scheveningen.
