International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, ICTY

The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) was established in 1993 by a United Nations Security Council resolution to address the serious violations of international humanitarian law which have been committed in the territory of the former Yugoslavia since 1991, and in response to the threat to international peace and security that this has posed.

The Tribunal is composed of 16 permanent judges who are elected by the U.N. General Assembly for a period of four years.

Mission

The ICTY has a four-fold mission:

1. To bring persons charged with violations of international humanitarian law to trial.
2. To render justice to their victims.
3. To deter further violations of the law.
4. To contribute to the restoration of peace by promoting reconciliation in the region
