Bicycle owners should beware: all bicycles not parked in the paid lock-up under Central Station or in the free lock-up on the Rijnstraat will be removed. The first bicycles have already been cleared away from the Koningin Julianaplein. All illegally parked bicycles will be removed by 7 May 2010.
The area around the Central Station will become a huge construction site in the coming months. The Koningin Julianaplein is now being prepared for the construction of a new apartment/office complex. Bikes not parked in the lock-ups are in any case illegally parked but now have to be cleared away to make room for the project.
Cyclists can easily prevent their bicycles from being removed by the municipality by parking them in the guarded lock-up under the station or in the free lock-up next to the station. They’ll also stay dry and safe there. People who park their bicycle elsewhere will be informed by signs and flyers that their bicycle is parked illegally and that it will be removed. Warning labels will be hung on bikes informing people that they need to park their bikes legally.
If the municipality removes a bicycle, it will be taken to the new Bicycle Depot Haaglanden at Junostraat 24 in the Binckhorst area. You can check if your bike is in the depot via the website www.fietsdepothaaglanden.nl.
If the bike is in the depot, the owner can get it back by paying € 15 (with a bank card only, not with cash or credit card) to cover the costs of removing the bicycle. The owner must be able to identify himself and prove (for example, by producing the right key) that the bicycle really belongs to him.
You can reach the depot using Bus 26 or Bus 30 (Zonweg stop). During the morning and evening rush hour you can also use Tram 10 (Binckhorstlaan stop) to get to the depot. Check the depot's website for the opening hours.
