The Abdijkerk was built between 1238 and 1250 as the chapel of a convent founded by Machteld van Brabant, the wife of Floris IV, Count of Holland. The Abdijkerk is the oldest building in Greater The Hague.

In 1925 the old Antonious Abt Church, situated on the Scheveningseweg, was demolished to make room for a new and bigger church. The new church was designed by Jos en Pierre Cuypers.
