The Hague won the National City Marketing Trophy on 7 June during the City Marketing Conference in Haarlem. The prize is for cities with more than 100,000 residents.
Ernst van den Berg, City Marketing Manager for The Hague, accepted the trophy on behalf of The Hague. Jury chairman Gerd Leers praised The Hague for its clearly defined city marketing goals. The city was also commended for the way in which it involved its residents in promoting the city.
Deputy Mayor Marjolein de Jong (City Marketing and Culture) responded enthusiastically. ‘This prize proves that we are working effectively on city marketing in The Hague. The number of visitors to cultural and other events in the city continues to rise, we are known abroad as the international city of peace and justice, and the city’s residents are truly proud of the city.’
De Jong said that The Hague was able to win the prize thank to the tireless enthusiasm of the former alderman for city marketing, Frits Huffnagel, who worked to get The Hague placed on the map both in the Netherlands and abroad. De Jong promised to continue the good work of Huffnagel to make The Hague even more attractive.
The National City Marketing Trophy was awarded this year for the first time. The prize is meant for the Dutch municipality which had the best city marketing programme in 2009. Other cities nominated for the category of cities with more than 100,000 residents were Rotterdam, Amersfoort, Haarlem and Groningen.
