The Hague to tackle parking in old districts

Published: 15 June 2011 Modified: 24 June 2011

The parking issue is so tenacious in five neighbourhoods (Oud-Leyenburg, Oud- Scheveningen, Vruchtenbuurt, Heesterbuurt and Laakkwartier-Oost), that paid parking doesn’t seem to be the answer.

The Municipality of The Hague will continue to tackle crowded street parking in residential areas. Over the last few years paid parking was successfully introduced in various neighbourhoods to reduce the overflow. However, the parking issue is so tenacious in five neighbourhoods (Oud-Leyenburg, Oud- Scheveningen, Vruchtenbuurt, Heesterbuurt and Laakkwartier-Oost), that paid parking doesn’t seem to be the answer.

According to Deputy Mayor Peter Smit (Transportation), the Municipal Executive pledged in the coalition agreement to create 2,500 parking spots in neighbourhoods where there was a structural shortage of parking. A portion of these new legal parking spots can be created by redesigning the streets. However, this isn’t a good enough solution for Laakkwartier-Oost, Oud-Leyenburg and the Vruchtenbuurt and there the Municipal Executive is looking at the possibility of parking garages.

Once new parking spots are created in a neighbourhood, paid parking is then introduced. This is needed to prevent the spots from being taken by non-neighbourhood residents.

The next new parking spots will be made in 2012. The municipality will consult residents associations in the five neighbourhoods and information evenings will be organised in the autumn of 2011.
