The Hague has been chosen to host the Cross Triathlon European Championships in 2012. This was announced on 24 June in Spain during the annual conference of the European Triathlon Union (ETU).
Henk van Lint, chairman of the Dutch Triathlon Union (NTB) said on behalf of the Dutch delegation that the decision was ‘a great outcome which was achieved through a concerted effort by the Municipality of The Hague, the NTB and the local organising committee. The strong bid didn’t miss its mark.’
Deputy Mayor Karsten Klein (Youth, Welfare and Sport) of The Hague said the event fits in well with The Hague’s ambition to host professional beach sport events. ‘Sea swimming and cycling and running on the beach and through the dunes let the participants see the best we can offer in terms of nature as the Global City by the Sea.’
Klein said he hoped that this event would help The Hague’s chances in being awarded the world championships in 2013 for which it is a contender.
