The Hague, International City of Peace and Justice, is also making a contribution to International Human Rights Day. After all The Hague with its numerous international tribunals, such as the International Court of Justice in the Peace Palace, plays an important role on the world’s stage in terms of human rights.
The 10th of December 2009 marks the 61st anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) by the General Assembly of the United Nations. This was the world’s first global enunciation of human rights.
To mark this occasion, the Netherlands Embassy in London has asked the Municipality of The Hague to contribute to a special section of its website dedicated to human rights. Many human rights organisations, academics and think tanks were also asked to share their recent thinking on human rights (see ‘Opinions’).
The website also provides information on official Dutch policy documents on human rights, speeches by members of the Dutch Cabinet and by the Netherlands Human Rights Ambassador as well as various related documents and statements.
You are also invited to join in the discussion and explain what human rights mean to you and how we can all work towards a world in which there is human dignity for all.
For more information, visit the website of the Netherlands Embassy in London.
