On 18 May The Hague, the International City of Peace and Justice and the second United Nations city in the world, will get its own permanent display of nearly 200 national flags on the Johan de Wittlaan.

Deputy Mayor Frits Huffnagel (International Affairs) and a number of international students will raise the flag of the United Nations, the flag of The Hague and the flags of all 192 United Nations Member States. According to Huffnagel, ‘This colourful display of flags makes the international status of The Hague even more visible. In the middle of the international zone it will now become clear to everyone that The Hague is a UN city.’

The flags will be displayed in two rows in the central reservation of the Johan de Wittlaan in the heart of the International Zone and will run from the Rooseveltplantsoen to the Bel Air Hotel. Lamps placed in the ground will illuminate the flags at night. Space has been set aside for new flagpoles of countries which become members of the UN in the future.

The Hague has reserved space in the International Zone for international organisations as well as restaurants and meeting facilities. The area should offer its users and residents a safe and attractive space with international allure.
