The Hague Beach Stadium for top class sport

Published: 15 June 2010 Modified: 06 July 2010

The Hague Beach Stadium in Scheveningen was officially opened for the 2010 season on 14 June. The fully renovated beach stadium will set the stage for a number of top class sporting events this summer until late September.

From 24 to 29 August the Swatch FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour will be held for the second time at The Hague Beach Stadium. Also expected are the European Beach Hockey Trophy and the Dutch Championships for beach handball, beach soccer, beach hockey and beach volleyball. Click here for this summer's activities.

Temporary stadium

The temporary stadium is again located on the Noorderstrand of Scheveningen next to the Noorderhavenhoofd (Strandweg 2) and will be able to accommodate 3,000 spectators. The stadium can be expanded in the coming years to accommodate more people. The complex also offers office space, toilets and showers, a first aid post, storage room and a roofed VIP terrace.  The stadium can be hired as a meeting or teambuilding venue.

Beach sport

Many beach sporting events originated on the sandy beaches of Scheveningen, including volleyball, korfball, soccer, tennis, badminton, hockey, footvolley, handball and rugby. These sports are still growing in popularity.

It is for this reason that The Hague has chosen to focus on the development of beach and sea sporting events in its ‘Top Sports Plan 2005-2010’. This plan also emphasises strong cooperation with sporting federations like the Dutch Volleyball Federation and the Dutch Beach Soccer Federation. The beach volleyball players are using the stadium as a training location.

Strengthening beach sport image

The stadium is owned by the Municipality of The Hague and is under the management of Den Haag Marketing (The Hague Convention & Visitors Bureau). The municipality strongly hopes that a permanent stadium will come in the future to further strengthen The Hague’s beach sport image. It would also represent an important step towards The Hague becoming a top class sport city.

Realising a permanent stadium, however, will heavily depend on the city’s redevelopment plans for the Scheveningen Boulevard and will take a number of years.
