Second phase of sand supplementation for Scheveningen Beach

Coastal Reinforcement Project

Published: 28 October 2010 Modified: 02 December 2010

Scheveningen Beach's extreme makeover is being done in two phases. The beach is being made 40 to 70 metres wider as part of the Coastal Reinforcement & Boulevard Redesign project. Some 1.5 million cubic metres of sand was sprayed onto the beach earlier this year to make it wider. Starting the first week of November the beach will be sprayed with an additional 1.1 million cubic metres of sand.

The sand supplementation project is taking place in the area between the harbour and the Pier and has been commissioned by the Municipality of The Hague and the Delfland Water Board. Crews will be working seven days a week, 24 hours a day to spray and spread the sand over the beach. Depending on weather conditions, the project should be completed within about five weeks.

Safety comes first

Spraying the beach is a beautiful spectacle and it is definitely worth your while to watch from the boulevard. Please pay particular attention to the following:

  • The sand will be distributed by heavy machinery.
  • Patches of quicksand could occur.
  • The area around the project will be fenced off.
  • It will be forbidden to enter the area where the sand supplementation project is taking place.
  • Beach visitors are required to keep their dogs leashed in the area around the fences.

People on horseback, surfers, dog owners and other people using the beach should bear this temporary situation in mind and the possible dangers. Surveillance workers and information signs will warn visitors to the beach of potentially dangerous situations.

1.1 million cubic metres of sand

Over the past few weeks preparations have been made for the sand supplementation project. There is now a pipeline over the beach between the harbour and the Pier.

Starting the first week of November a special ship, a so-called ‘trailing suction dredger’ will sail out to sea to extract sand about 15 kilometres from the coast. The dredger will suck up sand from the seafloor into the ship.  The sand will then be brought back to the harbour and inserted into a 2-km long floating pipeline and sprayed onto the beach. Bulldozers will then spread the sand evenly over the beach and sea currents will pick up the work from there.
