A driving licence is valid for up to 10 years. After it expires, you don’t need to take the test again. Instead, you simply renew your driving licence. We also call this extending your licence.
A driving licence is valid for up to 10 years. The document states the expiry date of your driving licence. You are advised to renew your driving licence before this expiry date. You will then receive a new driving licence. What happens if you don’t renew it in time? Then your driving licence expires.
You can renew your driving licence
Please note! You are not allowed to drive with an expired driving licence. You may only drive again once you have renewed your driving licence.
You will need a medical declaration from the Central Office for Motor Vehicle Driver Testing (CBR) in each of the following cases:
You want to renew a driving licence in category C, D or E.
To apply for a certificate of fitness, you will need a Medical Report Form.
To obtain a driving licence, you need to meet one of the following requirements:
The municipality will verify the authenticity of your identity documents.
Applying for a driving licence: € 45.25.
Expedited application procedure: an additional € 33.50.

Do you need your driving licence urgently? Then you may make use of the expedited procedure, in which case you will receive your licence after 1 working day (if the application is submitted before 14.00 hrs.). Additional charges apply to this procedure.
