What is it?

People with an EU/EEA or Swiss nationality who want to stay in The Hague for longer than 4 months have to register at the Immigration Office. They will then be registered in the Municipal Personal Records Database (GBA).

What are the conditions?

  • You are a citizen of an EU/EEA country or Switzerland.
  • You will be staying in The Hague for longer than 4 months.

What will I need?

  • Valid proof of identity. Please note: A driving licence will not be accepted as valid identification.
  • Proof of Occupancy.
  • A recently-issued original birth certificate. A recent original marriage certificate (if applicable). These documents will be reviewed while you wait.

Legalisation

Documents from certain countries must be legalised or provided with an apostille stamp. More information on this topic is available on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Translations

Documents from abroad which are not written in Dutch, French, German or English must be translated into Dutch by a sworn translator in the Netherlands.

The municipality will verify the authenticity of your identity documents.

How much will it cost?

This service is provided free of charge.

How long will it take?

You will be registered in the GBA while you wait. You will also receive a Burgerservicenummer (citizen service number) straight away along with the letter with your registration details.

How do I apply/What do I need to do?

  • Call the Immigration Office in The Hague and make an appointment for the registration procedure.
  • You will need to attend the appointment in person. Do your family members need to register, too? Then they need to come along as well.
  • Once you are officially registered in the GBA, you will also have to register with the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND). Please visit the website of the IND or call 0900-123 45 61 for more information.
