The Grote Markt and a portion of the Lutherseburgwal and Paviljoensgracht have been closed to vehicular traffic since 20 November 2009. This clears the way for the municipality to begin redesigning these streets. The project begins in the first week of March and will last until mid-September 2010.
The Grote Markt and the Lutherse Burgwal (until the parking garage) will be redesigned for pedestrians and cyclists. The new form for the Grote Markt will fit in better with the new design for the Grote Marktstraat (work begins in 2011).
The Paviljoensgracht will also get a new look with trees in the street and a brick pavement. Bicycle paths will be created on both sides of the street. The number of parking spots will remain the same. The Paviljoensbrug will be made so that vehicular traffic will not be able to cross the bridge anymore.
Work will begin in the first week of March. In order to limit the amount of inconvenience, the project will be carried out in phases.
The area will remain accessible for pedestrians, cyclists and local traffic. Emergency services of course will always have access. Delivery trucks, night buses and taxis may drive into the area during the pre-determined times. The Grote Markt and the Lutherse Burgwal (until the Lutherse Burgwal parking garage) will be closed to through traffic. The Grote Markt and Lutherse Burgwal parking garages will remain accessible.
