Problems handled by GP units

Published: 25 August 2009 Modified: 15 October 2009

SMASH services are intended for matters that cannot wait until your GP becomes available again. The GP services are only for emergency medical problems.

You can obtain advice, ask whether it is wise to wait, or find out what you can do about the condition in the meantime. Please provide the assistant with all the information she requests over the phone, as this is vital in order to give an accurate evaluation of the medical situation.

Which problems will not be handled?

Troublesome, but non-urgent complaints can wait until your own GP is available for consultation again. Refill prescriptions are issued only for truly essential medication and only for a brief period of time. Wanting a second opinion or not having time to consult your own GP during the week are not considered valid grounds for consulting SMASH.

Before you make the call…

Ensure that you have the medical insurance details at hand of the patient about whom you are calling. If you cannot give a valid medical insurance number, you will receive the bill yourself. Also make sure that you know the names and the dosages of all medication used by the patient. In case of a fever, also note the patient’s temperature.
